The guitar has been around a long time and like everything else has evolved over the centuries, but the basics are the same more or less, there is the body usually made of wood that has a soundboard or top where the bridge is affixed and a sound hole is placed. The neck is the long part that contains the fretboard and frets and at the top the headstock with the tuning keys attached. The strings are held by the bridge and attached to tuning keys than can be turned thus altering the tension of the strings. As the strings are plucked or strummed they vibrate, by pressing down the strings on the fretboard the length of the string is altered and therefore the vibration frequency. The vibrations are transferred through the bridge and into the soundboard, which in turn vibrates the air inside the body. The result is sound from the sound hole; this is a simplified explanation of what happens.

The guitar is made up of several main components, the headstock containing the machine head and tuning keys, the nut, a small strip of material between the headstock and neck, the neck is a long wooden piece that the fretboard, frets and inlays are attached to, the fretboard also called the finger board is a piece of wood embedded with metal frets, frets are located at exact points along the fretboard using a mathematical ratio that results in equal tempered division of the octave. The body (sound box) is constructed with a sound hole, pick guard and bridge attached to it, string vibration is transmitted through the bridge and saddle to the body via sound board or top, the sound board is typically made of woods such as spruce or cedar that aid tone quality. The strings are attached between the bridge and headstock and the tuning keys alter the tension and therefore the vibration frequency (note) of that string. As a finger is pressed on the string running along the fretboard the guitarist is effectively shorting the length of that string which changes the vibration frequency when plucked or strummed. The bridge holds the strings in place but it is not the only function it also transfers the vibration from the strings to the soundboard, which in turn vibrates the air inside of the guitar body and thereby amplifying the sound produced from plucking or strumming the strings.
